It's no secret that I have no intention of moving back to the area where I spent the first 21.5 years of my life: Scranton or Mountainhome, Pennsylvania. I'm perfectly happy here, where the west begins: Fort Worth, Texas. But I've got to give credit where credit is due and call out a few things that are just better there than here...or anywhere else, for that matter. Here we go...
13. Callie's Candy Kitchen, Mountainhome, PA
If you can better candy anywhere...well, you clearly haven't been to Callie's. I loved going here while growing up second to no other store. Between the yummiest chocolates (my mouth is watering this very moment thinking about their chocolate covered strawberries!) and the friendliest hospitality (no one can beat Mr. Callie himself!) this place is the A#1 best.
12. Yuengling Lager, Pottsville, PA
America's oldest brewery also produces America's best damn beer. Don't argue with me over this; I definitely know what I'm talking about. Only drawback: distribution basically limited to Eastern Seaboard states. Which Texas is not. *sob*
11. Delaware Water Gap, PA/NJ Border on I-80
Technically, Pennsylvania has to share this gem with New Jersey, but we'll claim the beauty for it, mkay? A lot of people talk about visiting New England in the fall to revel in the beauty of the changing leaves. Skip it! Instead, simply make the drive across I-80 from PA to NJ through the 'Gap' and you'll see the prettiest view you could imagine. Love it. Lots. I hate winter, not fond of fall, but I'll jump through blazing hoops to be there at season change!
10. Wings, NEPA
If you want wings, go to NEPA. My own personal favorite is Kelly's, especially on "Wing Night," which occurs every Wednesday. Pitcher of Yuengling, couple baskets of wings, and life is golden. Yum!
9. Pizza, Old Forge, PA
Some people like New York Pizza. Others say Chicago is the way to go. I saw pish tosh...go to Old Forge, PA. Pick damn near to any of the pizzerias, and you'll find that your mouth is saying "New York what?" and "Chicago where?"
8. Accents, Statewide
You can't really beat the plethora of accents found in the Keystone State. Travel down to the Amish country and listen to the local dialects of the Plain people. (Bring a German dictionary; it won't be the same, but it'll help!) Then come back up to NEPA and attempt to answer the age old question of "hayna or no?" Have no idea what the question queries? May take a few more trips back east to learn. Head west in PA and you can feel like you're in the Midwest without ever leaving the Northeast.
7. St. Patrick's Day Parade, Scranton, PA
Parade Day is a bigger holiday in Scranton, PA than, well, any other. But the trick to parade day isn't to find the best viewing location for the floats; it's to plot carefully where you'll start and end the day - and I'm talking bars here, folks. Big deal stuff. But ya have to be there to understand - so I highly encourage you to go!
6. Italian Festival, Scranton, PA
Every Labor Day weekend, the Italians in 'The Valley' respond to the Irish day of drunken debauchery by staging a weekend long eating orgy featuring the best damn Italian food, drinks and desserts you can imagine. Staged on Courthouse Square, it's an experience that can't be beat at a cost that will leave your tummy, kids and wallet feeling pleasantly pleased.
5. The Pothole, Archbald, PA
Anywhere else in America, drivers complain to local Departments of Public Works or Departments of Transportation to fill in the annoying potholes that slow down cars and screw up alignments. But in Archbald, PA, The Pothole is one that will never be filled (ok, that's most of 'em in PA) but will instead be visited both by bemused locals and curious visitors. Basically just a deep hole in the ground, it's actually considered a park and, well, go see!
4. Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA
Have you seen Rocky, or at least have you not lived under a rock at any point during the last 3 decades? Then do I really need to say more. Queue the music...and...STEPS!
3. The Diner, Statewide
There are more diners in PA than residents. Ok, that's not true, but if you want some truly yummy food anytime of day or night, head to a diner. I grew up loving the Mountainhome Diner, Scotrun Diner, Glider Diner, and Chick's Diner. What's your favorite?
2. Barrett Friendly Library, Barrett Township, PA
This institution puts the friendly in reading. Although no longer house in the most beautiful old stone building ever, this library should be duplicated all around the world, just to help people learn to love to read again. I've been in many libraries in many places, folks. Most remind me of an office building. Or prison. Not this one! Feels like going home to a good book. Oh, wait. You are.
(Full disclosure: I grew up going to this library, one of the librarians is the mom of my childhood best friend, and one of the others is a first cousin. Just so ya know...)
1. Lewis' Supermarket, Mountainhome, PA
I spent a large part of my childhood and adolescence in this store, either hanging out in the back office, the break room, or working at the front registers. I've still never found another store laid out in as sensible a manner, with friendlier checkout clerks, more knowledgeable staff, and a size that says "we got what you need without needing to display 6 varieties of every item and causing you to spend longer grocery shopping than you sleep in a typical day." If I could bottle this place and bring it to Texas, I would. In a heartbeat!
(Full disclosure: my dad was a part owner of this store for more than 40 years, along with two of my uncles, and it is now owned by two of my cousins with two more cousins working in it. Again, just so ya know...)

Happy Thursday to you all! Catherine is officially one week old today, and so in honor of that landmark, this Thursday Thirteen is all about her!
Thirteen Reasons Catherine is the BEST BABY EVER
- So adaptable - she didn't put up any fuss over the phototherapy lights she's having to sleep under!
- So brave - she's had blood drawn several times now and other than an initial scream, she only whimpers through the process.
- So nonchalant - in a house with 4 pets, someone is always around sniffing. Catherine just turns her head and lets the curious animal give her a once over.
- So hungry - this kiddo eats like a champ. We're talking 50 minute feedings where the only break in the action is switching sides.
- So big - even after losing a bit too much of her birth weight, she's rebounding nicely and is a good size for her age!
- So snuggly - having to keep her under lamps except during feedings is made very hard by the fact that she snuggles in with her mommy and daddy so nicely...we hate to put her down!
- So smart - that bunk about babies not being able to track with their eyes from birth is just that - bunk! She was tracking Chris from day one.
- So strong - weak baby necks? Pshaw! She held her head up without wavering from about 6 hours after birth.
- So pretty - have you seen my kid's hair? She was born with more hair than I had at age 2!
- So smiley - it's not just gas, I swear! This kiddo gives us the most beatific smiles on a regular basis.
- So scrunchy AND stretchy - she's like a worm...she can coil up to be so tiny but then can stretch out to be so big.
- So perfect - from perfect skin to perfect hair to perfect hands and feet and fingers and toes...she's just amazing!
- So OURS - obviously, the best part about Miss Catherine is that she's all ours...and we love her dearly!

Thirteen Favorites About October
- It's time for the playoffs in baseball...and the PHILLIES have made it to post-season again this year, so you KNOW who I'll be rooting for!
- The NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase is on in full force - GO DALE!
- How 'bout some football? (Go 49ers!) I don't get into all that college and high school madness for which Texans are famous, but professional football rocks! (I'm in a fantasy league that my husband talked me into joining...all the other members are police officers from around the state...but guess who has the most points and the ONLY 4-0 record?? Yeah, I rock.)
- Hallowe'en is coming! I love handing out candy to Trick-or-Treaters! (Although I'm always disappointed that no one wants to do tricks for me!)
- Hallowe'en candy - this really deserves it's own separate blog post...it's one of the only times of year that I indulge my sweet tooth!
- Haunted Houses - yes, yes, I love being scared! I especially love Fort Worth's haunted warehouse!
- Texas October weather - although summer is still my favorite time of year, we're lucky enough here in Texas that the warm weather holds over nicely through the end of October!
- Delaware Water Gap and changing colors. This is a little area on the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border that always has the most gorgeous color changes.
- The elections are fast approaching - don't forget to register and vote!
- It's breast cancer awareness month, and my company/office is participating, as usual, in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure over in Dallas on October 18th, 2008. Hmm...that date also sounds familiar...could it be that...
- The due date for our little Catherine is fast approaching! We thought there was a chance she'd be a September baby, but she's still snugly tucked inside.
- Many family birthdays - both in my family, as well as in my husband's. In fact, today is my brother-in-law's! Birthdays are fun! Go visit my cousin Nicki - her birthday is October 7th, which is the day before...
- My birthday! Don't forget to come back on October 8th and wish me a happy 28th this year!

Thirteen Favorite Memories of my Father
- Breakfasts in Ocean City
I've written several times about my special memories from Ocean City, New Jersey, but this memory specifically focuses on all of the times my Dad and I shared a breakfast together. Whether it was a short walk to our favorite neighborhood cafe, a drive to the other end of the island and the sit-down restaurant, or a bike ride up the boardwalk to an ocean-side eatery, we often enjoyed starting our days together. - Jeopardy
Because of the hours my Dad's grocery store kept, he was often home in time to watch Jeopardy, which came on every night at 7:30. Many times, he'd walk in the door just in time for the show to start and I'd dog his heels all the way to the TV so we could challenge each other over who would get the most answers. - 5th Grade Basketball
No, I didn't play. Have you met me? I'm short. But in the 5th grade, my elementary school had two basketball tournaments...one a father/son, the other a mother/daughter. At the father/son tournament, my Dad staged a "fight" with one of the refs over a supposedly bad call, to give himself an excuse to make donation to the school when the ref levied a fine. I've never laughed so hard in my life. Literally. It's a fabulous memory. - Statue of Liberty
During the summer between third and fourth grade, I had the awesome opportunity to play my violin at Carnegie Hall. Instead of going in and out of the city just for the concert, my family made a vacation of it. One of our sightseeing stops was the Statue of Liberty...and although my Mom had less than zero interest in trekking to the top, my Dad gamely trudged up about a million steps with me, alternating between encouraging me to keep walking as I got tired and actually pushing me up the stairs when I became absurdly paranoid of the spiral steps near the top. - Breakfasts in Mountainhome
Yeah, that'd be my hometown. Dad went to the Diner nearly daily for breakfast...and it was always special when he took me along. As a somewhat big fish in a small pond, everyone knew Dad, and it was always neat to visit with all the other tables and early morning diners. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. :-) - Generosity
My Dad was one of the most generous people I've ever met. In his grocery store, if someone at the checkout came up a buck or two short on paying for their order and Dad knew that they were in a tight spot or needed a bit of help, he always reached into his own wallet to finish paying for their food. No matter what organization in the area came around looking for financial or in-kind help, Dad was first in line, signing up with a monetary donation or arranging to provide whatever food was needed for a planned event. If our volunteer fire department was called out on a middle of the night fire, Dad invariably went down to the store and gathered up supplies to take to the fire hall so the guys would have something waiting for them to snack on when they pulled back in. Every single time in my life that I talked to Dad after I moved away from home, his last question was if I needed any money...even after Alzheimer's moved him past the point of managing his own money. I rarely took him up on the offer, always having preferred to pay my own way, but I also always knew that I'd have my Dad's support if I needed it. - Peppi, the Yorkshire Terrier
I begged and pleaded for years to get a dog when I was a kid. Finally...we got a Yorkie. But as much as the little two pound mutt loved me, he was always my Dad's dog. From the moment Dad got home from work at night until he left again the next morning, that dog followed his every step. And Dad loved him just as much...taking him on walks, letting him sleep in the bed, and even holding the puppy on his lap for car trips. - Burnt Eggs
You'd think that because my dad owned/operated a grocery store for 40+ years, he'd be great with food. And he absolutely was. Unless he had to cook it. I'll never forget one Saturday night when my Mom went out to a Philharmonic concert with one of her girlfriends and my Dad asked me what I wanted for dinner. For some reason, I asked for scrambled eggs. He tried. He really did. But they were blackened. And hard. Guess who ate cereal for dinner? Still a fun memory, though! - Las Vegas
Back in 1995, the 'fam headed out to California for Andrea's wedding. Mom had to leave soon after the big day to take care of a sick sister in Florida, but Dad and I stayed out West for another couple weeks. As a side trip, we flew to Las Vegas for about 4 days, to meet up with my Uncle Louie and Aunt Peg, who were also there on vacation. We had a blast! Mind you, I'd spent a good part of my childhood in casinos in Atlantic City, but for many reasons, those few days in Vegas were just that much more special. Plus, I won a bunch of cash. Cash is good. When you're 14. And in a casino. Where they don't care that you're 14. Haha! - Driving
I can't begin to imagine how many miles I spent driving with my Dad...but despite my frustration with his tendency to drive slower than the limit, it was always a good time spent together and we had many long and in-depth conversations, whether on the way to school and back, or headed down to the Jersey shore. - Meeting Chris
Living 1600 miles from my parents, they didn't get to meet Chris until we'd already been dating for over a year. In fact, we were already engaged and living together before we finally got up to PA. I think every girl in the world is a bit apprehensive when they take someone home to meet Dad...but it couldn't have gone any smoother the first time Dad met Chris. They started talking immediately (Chris was primed to understand Dad's Alzheimer's and to understand that a story might be 30 years old instead of recent...) and really hit it off. Color me way happy! - Dancing at my wedding
I was really worried that Dad wouldn't be in very good condition for my wedding. And although he certainly wasn't in great shape, he was still able to walk me down the aisle, and then dance with me at the reception. It made me cry then...and now it's making me cry again now...but we really had a great dance.

When Dad really went downhill so quickly in early March, we'd only found out a few weeks before that we were expecting a baby. We hadn't told anyone about baby yet...but decided, when we went to PA in such a hurry, that Dad would be the first to know. When we got to the nursing home to see Dad, Mom and I went down the hall to have a little discussion. While gone, Chris asked Dad if he could tell him a secret...and Chris claims up one side and down the other that my Dad responded my saying "tell me." (My skepticism comes from the fact that Dad was already almost entirely non-responsive and uncommunicative by the time we got to PA.) Chris told Dad that we had a baby on the way and says that in response, Dad squeezed his hand and a tear slid down his cheek. After that, Chris says that he asked Dad what he would like the baby to call him, and offered a few possible options, before Dad apparently agreed to be called Poppa. If you have followed my How to Have a Baby blog, you may have read the story about the stuffed bunny Chris bought for the baby when he found out we were expecting. So before we left PA on that trip to head back to Texas, Chris took a picture of Dad and I and the bunny. So although you can't see her, this picture is the only one Catherine will have with her Poppa. But you can bet we'll share lots of stories to make sure she knows what a special man her grandfather was!

- Grilled hot dogs - oh so unhealthy, but oh so yum!
- Pool parties - splish splash and relax...
- Going to the lake - little road trips to watery destinations are just the ideal 4th!
- Patriotic songs - guaranteed to make me tear up. Guaranteed.
- Parades,
- Marching bands,
- and ceremonies - more tears. Love these events.
- Red, white and blue - I think our nation's colors are just so striking - thanks, Britain!
- Time with family and friends - Independence Day is best shared with others.
- Baseball games - for some reason, games are just more fun on holidays!
- Da Beach - Growing up, we were down the shore nearly every 4th - I miss that!
- Grilled hot dogs - pregnant ladies get to mention food twice. I'm hungry even now!
- FIREWORKS - seriously, now. The 4th wouldn't be complete without a light show!

I have a full day at the office and then am flying to San Jose and having dinner with a friend before checking into my hotel. I'll be at the SJC airport coaching a few groups throughout the day on Friday and will arrive back home in Texas around 9 PM, where I'll turn around and pack to go to PA for 4 day. So...if I'm not around, you know why!**

Let's face facts, folks. People are painting Obama as a strong African American man who is representative of a race long underrepresented in politics. But that's bunk. Flat out. First of all, his father was African. Period. Not an American, not a decendant of the same legacy that Obama purports to represent. He was raised by a WHITE mother and spent a large portion of his childhood overseas. When he was in this country, he lived in Hawaii. Not exactly representative of the struggles of the people he's supposed to be the savior for. All of a sudden, he goes and becomes an organizer in Chicago to fill some selfish void within himself and get his ticket punched for having dark skin but having no identification point with people who have actually had struggle because of their race. - South Padre Island - been there; want to go again. BEACH!
- Austin - I've driven through many times; I've even spent a weekend on the UT campus teaching a leadership course. But I've never gone to Austin just to see Austin!
- Houston - I've driven through and flown through, but there's got to be more to Houston than that, right? I think I'll let Kristen show me around in May when we spend a day down there watching my Philadelphia Phillies face off against the Astros.
- El Paso - I want to see if my memory is correct: I took a train through El Paso to Arizona (from Chicago) when I was a little kid, and all I remember is barbed wire - surely, this city has more than a fence on the border - so I want to go see.
- Big Bend National Park - out in west Texas, this park is the size of Rhode Island. I'm not kidding. Definitely on the list.
- Midland and
- Odessa - Oil towns, west Texas, doesn't seem exciting, does it? But I think it would be fascinating to at least visit.
- Fredericksburg - The home of bed and breakfasts and museums - sounds like the perfect weekend trip!
- Galveston - I spent about 6 hours on Galveston Island over Christmas break and need more time there! It's a beautiful and intriguing area. I'd like to go see during Mardi Gras.
- College Station - I spent a weekend there a few years ago, but didn't really see much. My husband lived there for a year and loved it. That means it's a must-do!
- San Antonio - I've spent a bit of time in San Antonio, exploring the Alamo and Riverwalk area, but I'd like to spend more time looking at "less visited" areas.
- Corpus Christi - Chris lived here for a couple years and although we've driven through together, we haven't had time to go down so he can show me around properly. I'm looking forward to it!
- East Texas - camping! We were supposed to do this for my birthday, and ended up painting and laying hardwood on our stairs instead. So...it's time to reschedule!

4. Bill Pullman - if he can do it on the big screen...
5. Catherine Zeta Jones - because apparently my husband thinks she's hot.
6. Stu, the cashier from Kroger - because he was more diligent in counting back change than Hillary would be in regulating any kind of economic policy.
7. Mr. Peanut - dry roasted is better than dry speeches and dry ideas.
8. Santa Claus - I think more people could believe in him than Hillary!
9. Thomas Kinkade - his portraits of life are so much more enticing than Hillary's.

Hi, everyone!
It's been a hectic first few days in the new year, and so unfortunately, I am late to the game again this week in getting up my post! We spent most of yesterday winterizing our house - yes, even in Texas, this can be necessary! Our 22-year-old home also has 22-year-old windows and 22-year-old doors and well, insulation is a major issue. So while we have on the to-do and wish list an item to replace all windows and doors with new, more energy-efficient types, we've had to improvise in the meantime. I hate seeing $400 energy bills when we already use as little as we can, so $50 in supplies is well worth using to save money in future months...and it's already shown an effect because I was finally nice and toasty warm in my house last night withOUT the thermostat set to 80! Have I mentioned that I HATE WINTER?!
So now, without further ado, my Thursday Thirteen!

Hi, everyone!
I'm sorry it's so late in the day and I'm just now posting...yesterday and today were travel days for me, and by the time I got back to the airport this afternoon, I was just about awake enough to take a nap! :-) So I did!
Now, after a couple hours of cleaning and getting a bite to eat, I'm settling in to pay some attention to my poor blog and catch up on some freelancing - PLUS type in my handwritten notes for a short story that I started writing for the ORWCircle Hot Kiss Contest! :-)
I really struggled on what to write about for TT this week - I considered and discarded writing about 13 Things I've Done This Week, 13 Things I Want For Christmas, and various other banalities.
Instead, I decided to be COMPLETELY unoriginal and visit the forum at ThursdayThirteen.com and the "steal this idea" board...and so, I present...
THIRTEEN TV SHOWS I MISS
1. Murphy Brown - who doesn't love Candice Bergen?
2. Mr. Sterling - this was released by NBC after Providence ended - and with only 9 episodes broadcast, they never really gave it a damn chance to succeed. Argh.
3. Book of Daniel - This got a lot of criticism for being heretical and other nonsense like that, but it was a good show. 7 episodes = NBC sucks.
4. Everybody Loves Raymond - OMG, so funny.
5. The Nanny - Thank God for Lifetime Network - it caught me up on every single episode of this show and it's just fun all the way around. I HATE Fran's voice, but love the show.
6. Walker, Texas Ranger - There's a reason one of my WIPs focuses on Walker...mmm. Chuck Norris = hot older man fantasy.
7. Sisters - Nightime soap, basically, but boy did I get caught up in the lives of these women!
8. Providence - it started when I was dating Mark and we watched this show together EVERY WEEK - and my obsession outlasted that relationship and continued to the very end. Oh, Dr. Sid - I miss you!
9. The Nine - I really didn't want to like this show...but yet I did. ABC was really rotten to promise to air the remaining episodes and then even screw around with that...ABC still owes us FOUR episodes, dammit. Put this out on DVD now - I am freaking DYING to know what happens next.
10. Reba - good clean fun on TV. One of the only examples I can think of for a singer who actually can act!
11. Picket Fences - You go get 'em, Sheriff! (Just as soon you're done training Tom in Top Gun, that is - hahaha!)
12. Will and Grace - One of my favorite shows ever...I kind of fancy my BF Erin and I as a variation of Grace and Karen. HAHA!
13. Jericho - I CANNOT wait until the new episodes come out. And yes, I was one of the ones who sent NUTS!
And yes, these were all Network shows - I have cable almost primarily to watch movies and re-runs...I care not about the insipid "original" shows produced by HBO, TNT, TBS, etc. (Yes, Reba is the exception...) I think I'd be ok to go back to the UHF/VHF TV that sat in our kitchen growing up...3 channels plus PBS. Who needs more?

It's funny...my Mom has one from the first year they were put out...and she WILL NOT let me have it, despite the fact that I play piano, and she hasn't in at least 20 years...but my mother-in-law misunderstood why I wanted one of my own and was so happy to find one last weekend and asked me if I was so happy (after playing the book pretty much from start to end) because it reminded me of my Mom. Uh, no. When I think of happy Christmas memories, my Mom isn't exactly my first thought...she's a Humbug. Now...having one of these special music books for myself - happiness, happiness, happiness. I'd suggest everyone avoid my house for the next month...I won't get off my playing kick for awhile.

I'm sorry it's so late in the day and I'm just now posting...yesterday and today were travel days for me, and by the time I got back to the airport this afternoon, I was just about awake enough to take a nap! :-) So I did!
Now, after a couple hours of cleaning and getting a bite to eat, I'm settling in to pay some attention to my poor blog and catch up on some freelancing - PLUS type in my handwritten notes for a short story that I started writing for the ORWCircle Hot Kiss Contest! :-)
I really struggled on what to write about for TT this week - I considered and discarded writing about 13 Things I've Done This Week, 13 Things I Want For Christmas, and various other banalities.
Instead, I decided to be COMPLETELY unoriginal and visit the forum at ThursdayThirteen.com and the "steal this idea" board...and so, I present...
1. Murphy Brown - who doesn't love Candice Bergen?
2. Mr. Sterling - this was released by NBC after Providence ended - and with only 9 episodes broadcast, they never really gave it a damn chance to succeed. Argh.
3. Book of Daniel - This got a lot of criticism for being heretical and other nonsense like that, but it was a good show. 7 episodes = NBC sucks.
4. Everybody Loves Raymond - OMG, so funny.
5. The Nanny - Thank God for Lifetime Network - it caught me up on every single episode of this show and it's just fun all the way around. I HATE Fran's voice, but love the show.
6. Walker, Texas Ranger - There's a reason one of my WIPs focuses on Walker...mmm. Chuck Norris = hot older man fantasy.
7. Sisters - Nightime soap, basically, but boy did I get caught up in the lives of these women!
8. Providence - it started when I was dating Mark and we watched this show together EVERY WEEK - and my obsession outlasted that relationship and continued to the very end. Oh, Dr. Sid - I miss you!
9. The Nine - I really didn't want to like this show...but yet I did. ABC was really rotten to promise to air the remaining episodes and then even screw around with that...ABC still owes us FOUR episodes, dammit. Put this out on DVD now - I am freaking DYING to know what happens next.
10. Reba - good clean fun on TV. One of the only examples I can think of for a singer who actually can act!
11. Picket Fences - You go get 'em, Sheriff! (Just as soon you're done training Tom in Top Gun, that is - hahaha!)
12. Will and Grace - One of my favorite shows ever...I kind of fancy my BF Erin and I as a variation of Grace and Karen. HAHA!
13. Jericho - I CANNOT wait until the new episodes come out. And yes, I was one of the ones who sent NUTS!

Thursday Thirteen #7
I'm late! I'm late!
Boy, what a busy day it's been. We have major meetings at the office tomorrow, and so today was scramble day to make sure we were ready. Busy is good, but Tiffie is definitely tired tonight!
I'm so proud of myself, though! I've accomplished writing THREE DAYS IN A ROW towards my manuscript, Going Home. To me, that's fabulous. It's just baby steps, but it's a big deal to me.
Busy on the freelancing side as well...I've had some fairly steady work for awhile now, but I've also had the opportunity to land a fairly large gig that will last for the next month or so...and that I'm able to share with a gal from the Circle, so we'll both have some extra cash for Christmas. YAHOO! Keeping my fingers crossed that this goes well...it could mean steady work for some time to come if we gain more projects from this client, who is an absolute dream to work for.
Anyways, on to today's main attraction...
THIRTEEN STORIES I LOVE BY STEPHEN KING
1. Cell - what a look at how controlled we are by technology
2. Carrie - King's classic, still tells the story of HS cruelty
3. The Long Walk - when there is no hope...you take a walk
4. The Running Man - the Schwartzenegger movie kills this excellent book on desperation
5. The Stand - I always avoided this novel because of it's length, but it's now one of my favorites
6. Breathing Method - this short story is downright eerie
7. The Dark Half - his other half, come to life - hilarious when thought about in the framework of King vs. Bachman
8. The Langoliers - the short story behind the creepy movie - as always, the written word is better than the spoken
9. Rose Madder - a book for strong women everywhere - King writes just as well from a women's perspective as from a man's
10. Needful Things - the store in this story is basically Wal-Mart in my mind - souless and evil, but you just gotta shop there
11. From a Buick 8 - I read this book when I was going through a hard time mentally, and it really helped
12. Dolores Claiborne - another strong lady you can't help but love
13. Firestarter - Love it! My most read "King" book!

Thursday Thirteen #6
I can't believe it's that time of the week again...and even after skipping last week for Thanksgiving, I can't believe it's already time for another TT! Ack, what to write, what to write? (It's midnight, folks. My mind is dead.)
Whenever I'm not quite sure what to write next, or where one of my projects is headed, or when I'm just not in the mood to write, I have lots of ways to occupy my mind. That's what I call it, at least. For all the rest of ya'll, you might say I've just found...
Thirteen Ways to Procrastinate
1. Read - I pick up whatever novel I'm in the middle of - reading is never a bad thing, and it's a great way to waste - er - fill time until your next activity!
2. Surf - I tend to compulsively search the internet for random information. It may be looking for more writing jobs (when I already have enough to keep me busy) or pricing new cars (when the plan isn't to buy one for another 6-9 months) or even looking at hotels in places I want to visit. You may call it pointless; I call it research.
3. Write - Writing can definitely be a form of procrastination...when you start writing on things that have nothing to do with what you're supposed to be doing. Sometimes, when a project just ain't blowing up my skirt, I'll write on just about anything but that project. Sigh.
4. Recipes - I compulsively read recipes. I share that in common with my mother, who owns, no joke, over 200 cookbooks. (I think I'm being conservative. Before they moved a couple years ago, her shelved cookbooks took up 3 freestanding bookshelves, and she had tons more unshelved.)
5. Budget - Ok, so budgeting is a good thing, right? Saves money, pays off debt, yada yada. Except that I'm compulsive about it, and so when I'm looking to waste - er - fill a few minutes, I analyze various budget points. I'm a geek. Go away.
6. Schedule - Perhaps I just have a compulsive personality in general, but I like scheduling my time. In 15-minute slots. From waking up to going to sleep. But only occasionally. I think I use scheduling as a stress thing; when I feel like there's too much on my plate, I schedule everything.
7. Clean - I know, I know...cleanliness is next to Godliness. But I clean just to get out of doing other things at times...and luckily, I have a house that's pretty dang clean 95% of the time as a result, but I'm starting to think that I'd happily trade that in for a finished manuscript!
8. Fetch - My younger dog, Missy, only learned how to fetch at the age of almost-five. What other dogs do by instinct...well, her scrambled mind takes a lot longer to learn. So when I'm looking for a mind break, I'll either grab her tennis ball and head for the yard or her stuffed Christmas toy and stay in the house and we have ourselves some silly fun.
9. Pet - My kitty cats are just irresistable at times. They just beg to be pet. In my own defense, they sometimes come crawl in my lap while typing, occasionally laying right on the keyboard, so they make me procrastinate. Oh yes, they do!!
10. TV - Well, TV is usually a last resort, quite honestly. My mother-in-law and I were just talking over dinner tonight that I typically don't watch any shows unless Chris is home. I do, usually, keep it on for noise, however. Old habit from lots of time spent living alone. So when I'm at an impasse...I actually tune into whatever's on. Sometimes for hours. Thank God we gave up HBO!
11. Memes - Actually, that's why I did both my first Friday Feast and Manic Monday - I only really intended to keep up with TTs, but, finding myself with some time that I didn't want to use for the purpose it was intended, I got started...and now can't stop! (And don't want to, so nah!)
12. Organize - Ok, admittedly, this is truly, truly a last, last, last resort. Because as much as I like an organized house, I have to be in a truly manic mood to start organizing. But at certain times...it just works!
13. Sleep - When in doubt, naps work wonders. Always. Even 20 minutes! It's actually amazing how refreshed I sometimes feel after a quick episode of shut-eye. I think I'll go do that now, in fact...should get in a good 6 hours before it's time to start tomorrow! :-)
